On the streets of Lewistown and State College, the budget-friendly compact car is a common sight. A mainstay of college students, commuters, and new drivers for years. Compact cars provide safety, efficiency, and great value.

When you look at starter cars, there are few that are as appealing as the 2019 Toyota Corolla. It's the latest model in a line of what is the best-selling car worldwide, with over 40 million sold since its introduction in 1966. It's a package that combines great gas mileage and great safety in an inexpensive, reliable package. Over the years the Honda Civic has been relentlessly pursuing the Corolla's standing as the best-selling compact car - is the 2019 Honda Civic the year that will do so?

Is the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic more affordable?

Honda loves to brag that it has the most fuel-efficient compact car, thanks to the turbocharged engine in the 2019 Honda Civic EX. And that's true: you'll squeak 2 more miles per gallon on the highway from the Civic EX.

It'll cost you though - to the tune of an MSRP that is $4,000 more than the 2019 Toyota Corolla LE ECO. Instead of making you pay for an expensive optional engine, Toyota tuned the LE ECO to get 30 MPG city and 40 MPG highway from the base engine. So sure, you'll save money if you opt for the Civic. But at a rate of approximately a penny per mile, you'll need to get 400,000 miles out of that Civic until you break even with the savings from the less-expensive LE ECO.

Does the 2019 Toyota Corolla or the 2019 Honda Civic have more Interior Space?

Compact cars aren't as compact as they used to be. Today's compact cars are spacious inside - just look at the 2019 Toyota Corolla.

In the rear seat, passengers are provided with 37.1 inches of head room and 41.1 inches of legroom. While the 2019 Honda Civic offers the same head room, long-legged passengers will prefer the Corolla, as the Civic only offers 37.4 inches back there, a full four inches less. That's enough of a difference between a full-sized adult only being comfortable on short errands around Lewistown, or being comfortable on long trips to Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.

Which sedan has a better resale value, the Corolla or the Civic?

Even though the 2019 Toyota Corolla has had the same design since 2013, it has netted two J.D. Power Initial Quality Awards in the last three years. Rating new-vehicle quality during the first 90 days of ownership, the Corolla has far surpassed the Honda Civic, and the 2019 Honda Civic looks to continue in the middle of the pack, even after a recent redesign.

When you move on to your next vehicle, you want to know that you're going to get solid value for the one you've been driving. After all, a vehicle is an investment.

Kelley Blue Book determines brands and vehicles with the best resale values, and for three of the last five years, that brand has been Toyota. This recognizes the outstanding vehicles put out by an automaker, and you can be sure that any vehicle that automaker puts out will retain resale value that is above average. Honda has never won this award.

Does the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic have better Tech Features?

Connectivity is everything to the modern driver, and new compact cars need to have connectivity and infotainment at their heart.

The 2019 Honda Civic base model only features a 5-inch color LCD screen connected to four speakers. You can upgrade to a display audio system in the Sport trim, and get more speakers in the EX trim and above.

Or you can just get the 6.1-inch touch-screen display with Siri Eyes Free and iPod connectivity and control, standard in the base model of the 2019 Toyota Corolla. Paired with six speakers, it is the right system for a base vehicle. It's curious why Honda still thinks you don't deserve a touch screen with the base model.

Is the 2019 Toyota Corolla or the Honda Civic more affordable?

Toyota knows that one of the biggest factors in the eyes of a State College resident when it comes to a new vehicle is their budget.

The packages and trim levels of the 2019 Toyota Corolla were designed with that in mind. The base L trim comes in almost a grand under the starting price of the Civic, and the L still includes those excellent features mentioned above. Even the top-of-the-line Corolla XSE, featuring the Entune Audio Plus system, power tile/slide moonroof, eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat and much more, comes in under the Civic EX, which doesn't offer quite as many features.

These all highlight exactly why the Corolla is the best-selling vehicle ever, and why the 2019 Toyota Corolla outshines the 2019 Honda Civic. It isn't about piling on as much as possible, it's about doing it smartly, keeping cost in mind, and assuring buyers that reliability and value is never overlooked.
